The family of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse

The everyday challenges of living with a food allergy are laid bare in a new survey by The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation.

Findings from a new poll by Natasha’s Foundation, the UK’s food allergy charity, suggest that millions of people with food allergies face discrimination, indifference, tuts and eye rolls because of their condition.

This can significantly impact the mental health and wellbeing of people living with food allergies, and their families, leaving them feeling excluded, isolated, frustrated and anxious.

To help tackle these problems and others, we want the Government to appoint an Allergy Tsar, to champion the one in three people not just with food allergies but other allergies too.

The impact food allergies can have on the health and lives of people not just with food allergies but their families too was first highlighted by the high-profile inquest in 2018 into Natasha’s death.

Natasha was 15 years old when she died from a severe allergic reaction to sesame after she ate a baguette that contained the ingredient but didn’t list it on the labelling.

Since Natasha died in 2016, every year, others have died from food allergies, with children and young people most likely to suffer a fatal reaction.

20 leading food businesses signed a letter backing our campaign for an Allergy Tsar:

Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE, co-founder of The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, said:

Tanya & Nadim Ednan-Laperouse OBEs

‘The wide-ranging findings of this survey are shocking but sadly not surprising.

‘They show what we already know, that we still have an awfully long way to go to make people understand that food allergies are not a choice, but a serious and unpredictable health condition that, for some, can be life-threatening.

‘We would urge people to be more understanding of people with food allergies. Everyone should be able to participate fully in society without fear of indifference, bullying and discrimination.

‘These findings underline once again why the Government should appoint an Allergy Tsar to act as a champion for those not just with food allergies, but all types of allergies.

‘We are delighted that today 19 more food businesses are backing our campaign for an Allergy Tsar and understand that allergies are a serious medical issue that affects one in three people.

‘Given the time critical seriousness of this situation, we hope that Ministers will take prompt action, meet with us and appoint the Allergy Tsar we so desperately need to improve the lives of people for allergies.’
